Both assisted living and memory care support seniors who need help with daily tasks — but they serve different needs and operate very differently. Understanding the distinction helps families choose the right level of care and avoid paying for services their loved one doesn't need.

Memory care is not simply assisted living with a locked door — it is a completely different care model built around cognitive support.

What is assisted living?

Assisted living communities support seniors who need help with activities of daily living (ADLs) — bathing, dressing, medication management — but who do not require 24-hour skilled nursing care. Residents typically live in private apartments, enjoy communal dining and activities, and maintain a significant degree of independence. Staff provide scheduled assistance, not constant supervision.

What is memory care?

Memory care is a specialized form of senior living designed for people with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other forms of cognitive impairment. It differs from assisted living in several key ways: the physical environment is secured to prevent wandering; staffing ratios are higher; all staff receive specialized dementia training; and activities are designed specifically to engage and support people with memory loss.

How to choose between them

If your loved one is relatively independent but needs help with a few daily tasks and has no significant cognitive impairment, assisted living is likely the right fit. If they have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or dementia, have wandered or gotten lost, or require constant supervision for safety, memory care provides the specialized environment they need. An advisor can assess your specific situation at no cost.
